Bring your own boat and explore the whole lagoon of Grado or sail into the northern Adriatic sea. You can also rent a pedal boat to boat along the island.

You would be hard pressed to find a place on planet earth as surreal as the city of Venice, Italy. Built on wooden supports in the middle of the Venetian lagoon in the middle ages, Venice rose to become the wealthiest city in the world and a major world power. Venice controlled merchant ships and the exchange of goods for centuries. If there was money to be made, it went through Venice, which is why the city remains today as a jewel among world cities.
The traces of the great Roman Empire are here, in Aquileia, a bulwark against the invasion of barbarian peoples, a starting point for expeditions and military conquests, a great commercial hub.
Suffice it to say that under the rule of Caesar Augustus it became the capital of the "X Regio Venetia et Histria", being the fourth city of the peninsula for number of inhabitants.
The Castle of Duino, owned by the Princes della Torre and Tasso, was built in 1300 on the ruins of a Roman outpost.
It looks like a composite and massive building that dominates the Gulf of Trieste. Inside, it holds important art masterpieces and refined historical relics.
The castle of Miramare dates back to the mid-nineteenth century and was built by will of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg to live there together with his consort Charlotte of Belgium. The name derives from the Spanish "mirar el mar", as the archduke, visiting the promontory where it was then built, was inspired by the memory of Spanish castles on the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean.
